Sculpted Sundial

Salem High School, Virginia Beach, VA

September 2010

Earlier this summer Brickstone Studios was contacted by chemistry teacher Heather Harwood from Salem High School in Virginia Beach, Va. She and Richard Hudak were co-sponsors of the class of 2010, and they had a request: The class of 2010 had raised funds to leave a gift that would stand the test of time and be seen by all future and former sundevils. A few ideas were discussed, until finally the perfect solution became apparent. What better to stand the test of time than a sundial!

Brickstone Studios immediately got busy on research and design ideas. We came upon the idea of a universal equatorial sundial. We would place the Sun Devil logo in the center. Italian Sculptor, Alessandro Emanuel was commissioned by Brickstone to do the preliminary sculpt, and then it was honed to perfection by Robert Paterson, our plant manager and technical guru.

After weeks of sculpting, perfecting and staining the sundial is now proudly position directly in front of the school. This sundials design goes back hundreds of years. Its face is parallel to the equator and its gnomon point’s true north. It’s actually a miniature Earth. It’s time will vary throughout the year, but is predictable. Studies in astronomy will answer the why’s and can provided some valuable lessons to those that study it. Hopefully, this will be part of its future. Right now, it’s a piece we at Brickstone Studios are very proud of!
