The ever popular Norfolk Mermaids are continually making an appearance all around Norfolk.
Local artists have put their special touches on them in an array of colors and textures.
You see them in front of businesses, private homes, along the waterfronts…each and every one having their own personality. Initially the mermaids that went up for auction were made of fiberglass, about 10 foot in length and were hollow. At Brickstone Studios, we make the 10 foot mermaid, along with a smaller 4 foot size that is just perfect for people’s yards. They are made of pre-cast stone and are very durable and attractive, even without the paint or tile adornment. In addition to the typical Norfolk mermaid, we have just introduced a new mermaid we named Serena (Italian for mermaid). Serena was sculpted by local artist Christine Harris. She took our 4 foot plain Norfolk mermaid and added lots of details such as beautiful flowing hair, a peaceful smiling face, shells on her top and her tail is meticulously ornate with scales.
Serena is 4 foot, available on a pole, or you can purchase just the front side which is perfect for hanging on a wall or fence. All of our Norfolk mermaids have these options. We also have Norfolk mermaids on 7 inch tiles and 18″ plaques which make great gifts. Prices start at $7.
Mosaics are very nice added to the Norfolk mermaids. We have an artist, Marysharon Melchiorre, who creates these for you or you can take a class from her and make your own personal design. This one is located on the bay in Ocean View and displays the homeowners address.
